BRUSSELS, August 7 (RIA Novosti) – Belgium supplies Russia with 400 million euros ($535 million) of agricultural and alimentary products annually, which represents 7% of the country’s total food exports, Brussels-based public television and radio broadcaster RTBF says.

“For instance, 40% of Belgian pears are sold in Russia,” RTBF reported, also noting that Belgian farmers believe it will be hard for them to find new clients.

RTBF was citing figures as of 2012, when Russia was the 13th largest importer of Belgian products, accounting for 1.6% of Belgian exports, or 5.4 billion euros ($7.2 billion) annually.

About 2,400 Belgian companies supply products to Russia. Belgian exports are primarily composed of chemical and engineering products, goods for the transportation sector and other items that are unlikely to be present on Moscow’s “black list” published earlier today, RTBF notes.

According to Raiffeisen estimates, EU agricultural and alimentary produce exports to Russia total 10-12 billion euros ($13-16 billion) per year.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin singed an order on economic measures to protect the country's security. The decree banned imports of agricultural and food products from countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia for a year.

The list of banned agricultural products includes meat, poultry and milk products as well as fruits and vegetables from the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia and Norway.
