The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has polluted American rivers and is working with environmentalists to ensure this does not happen again, the agency’s spokeswoman told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

NEW YORK, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has polluted American rivers and is working with environmentalists to ensure this does not happen again, the agency’s spokeswoman told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

“From time to time we have had small spills – but we already report those,” Michael Coffey, a US Army Corps of Engineers Public Affairs Officer in the Northwestern Division said.

“The US Army Corps of Engineers has entered into an agreement with Columbia Riverkeeper to settle the pending court case. At this time, the court has not yet acted and the agreement would be effective once the court actually acts on the proposed agreement that’s been filed,” Coffey told RIA Novosti.

Under the terms of the settlement, the Corps must apply for permits, file more pollution reports, consider switching to environmentally-friendly lubricants and pay $143,500 of Columbia Riverkeeper’s legal fees, added Coffey.

Columbia Riverkeeper, a conservation group, said the Corps had violated the Clean Water Act with unmonitored, unpermitted oil discharges from its eight hydroelectric dams along the Columbia and Snake rivers in Oregon and Washington. The settlement was filed in US District Court in Portland.
