Canada Expands Russia ‘Black List’ Over Ukraine Crisis

Canada’s government on Wednesday said it has expanded its sanctions list against Russia adding 19 Russian and Ukrainian citizens and five banks, the website of the country’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced.

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) – Canada’s government on Wednesday said it has expanded its sanctions list against Russia adding 19 Russian and Ukrainian citizens and five banks, the website of the country’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper has announced.

The list also includes several Crimean companies.

Among the Russian banks targeted by the sanctions are the Bank of Moscow, the Russian Agricultural Bank (Rosselkhozbank), the Russian National Commercial Bank and the VTB.

The expanded the sanctions' list includes Russian Federal Security Service chief Aleksander Bortnikov, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov and Russian Security Council member Boris Gryzlov.

The sanctions also hit Aeroflot’s low-cost subsidiary, Dobrolet, for conducting flights to Crimea, and the United Shipbuilding Corporation, involved in a deal to supply Mistral class amphibious assault ships as a sub-contractor of the STX France shipyard in Saint Nazaire.

On August 1, The European Union and the United States imposed a new set of economic sanctions against Russia, linking it to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The sanctions are designed to limit access to European capital markets for a number of Russian banks. Earlier, Washington had slapped sanctions on several Russian defense industry and energy companies.
