TEL AVIV, August, 5 (RIA Novosti) - Israeli troops have destroyed underground tunnels in Gaza and are leaving the territory as the 72-hour ceasefire begins, an Israel Defense Forces press secretary told RIA Novosti.
“We have terminated the demolition of all 32 tunnels. The forces are now being pulled out to Israeli territory,” the official said.
The destruction of a branched system of underpasses smuggled for “subversive action on Israeli territory” is said to be the only task of Israeli infantry, armored and engineer units, according to the press secretary.
The ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian groups led by Hamas, concluded with the meditation of Egypt, has began at 05:00 GMT and is supposed to last for 72 hours. Both parties are expected to begin indirect talks on the final settlement of the conflict in the Gaza Strip soon after the ceasefire has taken effect.
