TOKYO, August 4 (RIA Novosti) - One person was killed and another one seriously injured due to heavy showers on Japan’s southeastern Shikoku Island caused by Typhoon Nakri, Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said Monday.
“In Kochi prefecture 1,100 millimeters of rain has fallen. In nearest 24 hours great caution should be exercised in Shikoku as well as in the northern parts of the country including Hokkaido. We have information about one dead person and one person in serious condition. We are also receiving reports on flooded houses,” Suga said at a press conference.
According to the official, a meeting that focused on the collection of data concerning the damage and necessary disaster management measures took place on Monday.
The consequences of the Nakri typhoon, which has now turned into a high pressure area near the Korean peninsula, are still felt by the inhabitants of Shikoku: the level of rainfall during the weekend exceeded the monthly rainfall for August by two to three times. On Sunday the 330,000 population of the city of Kochi was advised to evacuate due to the threat of river floods. The island is now experiencing power outages, and in a remote part of Kochi, 78 children were stranded in a summer camp because of the mountain landslide.
In the middle of July, the southern and central parts of Japan were hit by Typhoon Neoguri which was considered the strongest of the cyclones hitting the Japanese archipelago during the month. According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency of Japan, the typhoon caused the death of three people and injured 63. More than 500 houses were damaged or flooded.
