Ukrainian authorities spend 70 million hryvnias ($5.8 million) daily on conducting the special military operation in the southeast of the country, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a parliament session Thursday.

KIEV, July 31 (RIA Novosti) – Ukrainian authorities spend 70 million hryvnias ($5.8 million) daily on conducting the special military operation in the southeast of the country, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said at a parliament session Thursday.

“Currently, Ukraine spends 70 million hryvnia [$5.8 million] a day to implement the anti-terrorist operation [in the southeast of the country],” Poroshenko said.

During the Thursday session, Ukraine’s parliament amended the state budget for this year, allocating $758 million for additional funding of the Armed Forces and $158 million for the rehabilitation of Luhansk and Donetsk regions’ infrastructure.

Ukraine’s parliament also amended the country’s tax code, introducing a temporary military tax of 1.5 percent on working citizens’ wages. The government expects to obtain $241 million from the tax.

Ukraine’s new authorities earlier said the country’s treasury was empty and announced that the government would be cutting back costs. In particular, Kiev developed a sequestration of the budget that applies cuts to social benefits.

In late February, Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers announced a “regime of economy” in order to balance its budget.

Kiev launched a special military operation in mid-April to suppress independence supporters in the southeast of Ukraine, who refused to recognize the legitimacy of coup-imposed authorities.

The fighting intensified after Donetsk and Luhansk regions proclaimed themselves independent people’s republics in May.

According to the UN Commissioner for Human Rights (UNCHR) and the World Health Organization (WHO), 1,129 civilians were killed and 3,442 injured in the region from mid-April to July 26.

Moscow has described the ongoing military action as punitive and has repeatedly called on Kiev to put an immediate end to the bloodshed.
