Luhansk region has been disconnected from the country’s power grid after primary substation was destroyed by a projectile, acting governor Irina Verigina reported Saturday.

KIEV, July 26 (RIA Novosti) - Luhansk region has been disconnected from the country’s power grid after primary substation was destroyed by a projectile, acting governor Irina Verigina reported Saturday.

The region is disconnected from Ukraine’s power system due to direct hit to the primary substation near the city of Bryanka, Verigina wrote on Facebook.

"We received electricity through the Donetsk region. Now our power engineers are trying to increase the power at station in the Shchastiya locality. They also hold negotiations to try and connect to other substations," Verigin added.

Earlier the same day, 15 civilians were killed and about 60 injured in a mortar attack on Luhansk, the city’s commandant told RIA Novosti.

Kiev authorities launched a special military operation in the east of Ukraine in mid-April in a crackdown on the independence movement. Hundreds of people, including civilians have died in both regions over the past months.

Moscow has described the ongoing military action as a punitive operation and has repeatedly called on Kiev to put an immediate end to the bloodshed. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has also urged the international community to intervene and investigate the crimes against humanity that occurred in Ukraine in recent months.
