TEL AVIV, July 25 (RIA Novosti) – The Israeli Security Cabinet rejected Friday a proposal by US Secretary of State John Kerry for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, local TV channels reported.

All the discussions on the issue were held behind closed doors but media reports said the proposal included a five-day or a week-long ‘humanitarian pause’ during which the warring parties through mediators could agree on the conditions of a sustainable truce including social, economic and political aspects.

Israel has been conducting its military operation in the Gaza Strip targeting the Hamas movement and its allied groups of Palestinian militants since July 7.

Late July 17, following days of shelling and aerial bombardment the Israeli military moved to a ground invasion bringing its troops and armored vehicles in the region.

According to the recent reports, over 800 Palestinians have already died and more than 5,000 injured as the conflict reached its 18th day. The Israeli side has lost about 40 people.
