MOSCOW, July 25 (RIA Novosti) - Emerging countries will play a defining role in the global installed nuclear capacity expansion, driven by the demand for more and more power, GlobalData website says.
“Nuclear power has the capacity to produce large amounts of electricity and therefore meet the growing demand for power,” Pranav Srivastava, GlobalData’s Associate Analyst covering Nuclear Power, said.
The company’s report stated that emerging markets’ interest and activity in nuclear energy sector will increase nuclear installed capacity worldwide from 371 Gigawatts (GW) in 2013 to 517 GW by 2025.
GlobalData said that the emerging nuclear countries in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region are constructing more than 20 nuclear reactors, which will add 13.8 GW of nuclear power by 2030. Vietnam alone will account for 10 of the reactors and 6.8 GW of power.
Vietnam has already signed deals on the construction of the nuclear reactors with Russia and Japan.
The world’s nuclear power generation decreased in 2011 and 2012, which was the result of the 2011 meltdown of three of Fukushima Daiichi plant’s reactors after an earthquake hit north-eastern Japan.
According to Srivastava, under the influence of the disaster, Germany and Switzerland have plans to phase out nuclear power, while China, Japan, France and the UK have developed strong nuclear safety frameworks and performed stress tests on their existing nuclear reactors to ensure safe operations.
