GAZA, July 24 (RIA Novosti) – Israeli troops attacked a UN-run school in the north of Gaza Strip, killing and injuring Palestinian refugees, a representative of the local health ministry told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

“Israel carried out airstrikes of the school in the city of Beit-Hanun, where hundreds of refugees were hiding from the shelling and bombardments. According to our data, the number of those deceased and injured amounts to dozens,” the source said.

Media reports say at least 15 people have been killed during the school attack, including one baby.

Israel launched Operation Protective Edge on July 8, 2014, with the alleged objective to prevent Hamas militants from firing rockets from Gaza. On July 17, the Israeli military switched to a ground invasion, aimed at destroying underground tunnels dug by radicals, used to secretly enter the Israeli territory.

On Sunday, Israel announced it was expanding its ground offensive in the Gaza Strip, following days of shelling. At least 597 Palestinians, including 152 children and 82 women were killed, 150,000 people have been displaced and at least 3,143 houses have been destroyed in the operation.
