Tsarnaev’s Friend Arrested on Drug, Gun Charges - Reports

Stephen Silva, a close friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is charged with organizing the Boston Marathon bombing, was arrested and taken to court on charges of drug and firearm possession, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW, July 23 (RIA Novosti) - Stephen Silva, a close friend of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who is charged with organizing the Boston Marathon bombing, was arrested and taken to court on charges of drug and firearm possession, The Boston Globe reported Wednesday.

“Stephen Silva, the defendant herein, did knowingly and intentionally combine, conspire, confederate, and agree with persons known and unknown to the Grand Jury, to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute heroin,” the document on the case released by the US District Court in Massachusetts stated.

According to the documents, Silva “knowingly received and possessed a firearm, to wit: a Ruger model P95 9mm pistol, which had the importer’s and manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated.”

The same model of the gun was allegedly used in the shooting of MIT police officer Sean Collier.

According to the newspaper, a spokeswoman from the US Attorney’s office did not say whether Silva’s arrest was linked to Collier’s death, while Silva’s lawyer declined to comment if the arrest was linked to the Boston Marathon bombing investigation.

Stephen Silva was close friends with Tsarnaev and his classmate.

The Boston Marathon bombings took place on April 15, 2013. Two explosions took the lives of three people and injured more than 260.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his older brother, Tamerlan, were on the run after the FBI published their photos as the bombing suspects on April 18. Tamerlan was killed on April 19, during a gunfight with police.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was arrested the same day and currently faces 30 charges, 17 of which are punishable by death. The first trial on his case was held on July 10, 2013. The next trial in federal court in scheduled for November 3.
