MOSCOW, July 16 (RIA Novosti) - Current EU policy is outdated and sanctions against Russia deserve to be condemned, said the founder of the Five Star Movement political party Beppe Grillo in an interview to Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.
According to Grillo, Europe “follows the policy of the past century, which is outdated and ineffective.”
“If we look at the past 30 years, which is not that far back, we will see that the ‘western system’, as we understand it, has been only too often unable to resolve the issues it has been faced with,” he added. “The Five Star Movement will do its best to have decisions made in accordance with the current spirit of time.”
Grillo also condemned sanctions against Russia, imposed by the US and EU, saying that “it is vital to have a comprehensive dialogue with Russia and decisively condemn sanctions against the Russian people.”
The Five Star Movement founder deems it essential to re-evaluate the role of Italy in the EU and NATO, and for the EU members to respect each other’s traditions and have decision-making process free from “strong” countries’ influence.
On Tuesday, Obama urged the EU members to take more rigid measures against Russia. Should the EU leaders refuse to adopt new sanctions, Washington is ready to act unilaterally.
At the last general election in Italy on May 25, the Five Star Movement took 21.15 percent of the vote, which is the second result after the ruling Democratic Party’s 40.81 percent.
