WASHINGTON, July 15 (RIA Novosti) – US President Barack Obama and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping discussed in a telephone conversation Monday the possibilities of US-China cooperation in the ongoing nuclear talks between Iran and six world mediators, the White House said.

“In this context, the President and President Xi discussed the need for continued US-China cooperation in the ongoing P5+1 negotiations with Iran and the implementation of the Joint Plan of Action. The president [Obama] underscored the need for Iran to take the steps necessary to assure the international community that its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful,” a statement by the White House read.

The final sixth round of negotiations between Iran and the six world powers — US, UK, France, Germany, Russia and China — the so-called P5+1 group, has been underway in Vienna since July 2.

Both sides hope to reach a consensus before the deadline to reach a deal on the controversial nuclear program on July 20.

While talking to Xi, Obama also spoke in favor of further coordination of efforts with China “to ensure North Korea meets its denuclearization commitments.”

As for bilateral cooperation, Obama said that the US is interested in “a relationship defined by increased practical cooperation and constructive management of differences.”

Relations between the US and China remain strained over a number of issues including the balance of power in Southeast Asia, cyber-espionage and currency exchange rates. However, the two countries maintain a strategic and economic dialogue with the latest round taking place in Beijing on July 9-10.

Obama and Xi Jinping also held regular meetings to discuss differences and bilateral cooperation.
