Brazilian President Advocates Closer Ties with Russia

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff spoke in favor of closer ties with Russia and further deepening of strategic partnership.

BRASILIA, July 15 (RIA Novosti) – Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff spoke in favor of closer ties with Russia and further deepening of strategic partnership.

“We can achieve a lot not only due to dynamics of our economies but also owing to the great potential our strategic partnership shows,” Rousseff stressed during an official lunch at the Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia in honor of Russian President Vladimir Putin Monday.

“The relations between our countries have been given a fresh impetus over the past years both in the bilateral format and during such important international forums as the BRICS group, the G20, the United Nations,” the Brazilian leader said.

She pointed to a number of fruitful long-term prospects for the Brazilian-Russian cooperation in such spheres as the peaceful use of atomic energy, military and technical cooperation, cooperation in the sphere of science and technology.

Speaking of the BRICS summit kicking off in Brazil’s northeast city of Fortaleza later on Tuesday, Rousseff noted an increasing role of this association resulting in the upcoming establishment of the Development Bank and creation of a BRICS pool of foreign currency reserves.

The Brazilian president mentioned also the World Cup that was recently held in her country. According to Rousseff, over 10,000 Russian football fans came to Brazil to watch the event. The next tournament will take place in Russia in 2018.

“Thousands of Brazilian citizens will return the visit to Russia in 2018,” Rousseff said.

She also congratulated Russia and its citizens on a successful organization of the Sochi Olympics and expressed hope that the 2018 World Cup in Russia would be organized at the highest level.

Rousseff also invited Putin to attend the 2016 Summer Olympics that will be held in in Rio de Janeiro.
