VLADIVOSTOK, July 15 (RIA Novosti) – Citizens of Amur Region in Russia’s Far East have sent almost 10 tons of humanitarian aid to Ukrainian refugees in Volgograd Region, local authorities said Tuesday.

“Boeing-767 passenger plane of Transaero company carrying 9.3 tons of humanitarian cargo departed for Moscow on Tuesday,” the Amur Region administration said in a statement, adding that the plane will later fly to Volgograd Region in central Russia.

Local authorities said the region is ready to shelter more than 1,200 Ukrainian refugees.

The head of Russia’s Federal Migration Service (FMS), Konstantin Romodanovsky, announced Monday that nearly 490,000 people have fled Ukraine for Russia since the beginning of the crisis.

The number of refugees fleeing from southeastern Ukraine to Russia has increased dramatically since June as a result of the ongoing Kiev-led military operation against independence supporters. Several thousand people cross the Ukrainian-Russian border every day, with more than 50 Russian regions hosting the refugees.
