WASHINGTON, July 14 (RIA Novosti) – Russian consular officials Monday met with Russian citizen Roman Seleznev, a lawmaker’s son recently arrested on bank fraud charges by the US, a spokesman for the Consulate General of Russia in San Francisco said.

Meetings are also being held with Seleznev’s lawyers and representatives of US authorities. Russian diplomats are expecting to see Seleznev for the second time. “The meetings continue,” the spokesman said, giving no further details.

The Russian diplomats are seeking to learn about the conditions of Seleznev’s detention and report his possible complaints to protect his rights.

Seleznev, 30, was arrested on July 5, in a Maldivian airport by US secret services on suspicion of cybercrime. Seleznev was taken to the US island of Guam in the Pacific Ocean, where he appeared in court on Monday. The ensuing hearings are to be held on July 22.

The detained Russian citizen, accused of fraud involving credit cards and theft of personal data, faces up to 30 years in jail. US authorities have failed to explain under what circumstances Seleznev was detained and taken to a third country.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has called the incident an unfriendly move by the United States and a de facto kidnapping. Seleznev may die in custody if denied medical care due to a massive brain injury after a terrorist attack in Morocco in 2011, his father said.
