KIEV, July 11 (RIA Novosti) - A bus carrying miners to work came under artillery attack in Luhansk Region, leaving fatal casualties and 15 injured, Ukrainian energy company DTEK, Donbas Fuel-Energy Company, announced Friday.

"On July 10, at 5:40 p.m. [14:40 GMT], a bus carrying miners to their workplace at DTEK's Chervonopartizanskoye mine, came under artillery shelling. As a result of a mine hit, 15 people were injured, and there are fatal casualties," the company's statement said, without specifying the number of those killed.

The company's staff sent condolences to the families of those killed in the shelling. The company has suspended operations at several enterprises in the region.

Since mid-April, Kiev’s authorities have been conducting a special military operation in the east of Ukraine to suppress the independence movement. The violence intensified after the Luhansk and Donetsk regions declared independence from Ukraine in May. Hundreds of people, including civilians, have died in both regions in the past few months.

Moscow has described the ongoing military action as a punitive operation and called for an immediate end to the bloodshed.
