TOKYO, July 9 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian embassy has not received any reports of injured Russian citizens in Okinawa when it was hit by a powerful typhoon, Oleg Ryabov, head of the consulate department of the Russian embassy in Japan, told RIA Novosti Wednesday.
“We presume that all Russians who live there permanently and who arrived as tourists are safe and sound. We did not receive any negative reports,” Ryabov said.
Typhoon Neoguri, declared the strongest typhoon in history, hit Japan in early July. The storm has now left the Okinawa prefecture and is heading toward the island of Kyushu. However, Japan’s main weather agency has not lifted the alert issued in the area on Monday. According to preliminary data, at least two people have been killed and 30 injured.
The majority of the injured have fractures, which they received as a result of being knocked down by the severe wind gusts.
Japan’s main weather agency warns that up to 30 centimeters (12 inches) of rain may fall on the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku by Thursday morning with gusts of up to 180 kilometers per hour (110 miles an hour).
Neoguri is currently over the Pacific Ocean and is continuing to move north at a speed of 25 kilometers per hour (15 miles an hour). The height of the waves can reach ten meters (32.8 feet).
According to forecasts, the typhoon should reach Kyushu by Thursday morning. If the direction of the typhoon does not change, it will hit Japan’s central regions, including Tokyo, by Friday.
