WASHINGTON, July 8 (RIA Novosti)- The US is concerned with possible attempts to seize power in Afghanistan due to disagreements over the recent presidential election in the country and has warned Kabul about the suspension of its aid if a regime change occurs, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday.

"Any action to take power by extra-legal means will cost Afghanistan the financial and security support of the United States and the international community," Kerry said in a statement issued by the US embassy in Kabul.

According to the official, the US is concerned by a suggestion to form a “parallel government” and urged Afghan’s election committees to conduct a thorough investigation into all the violations detected during the voting.

Kerry also noted that there is no excuse for violent threats and unconstitutional means of gaining power. The secretary of state has made a call for Afghanistan’s military forces to maintain their nonpolitical role.

Earlier, the preliminary results of the second round of the presidential election were announced in Afghanistan. According to the results, the country’s former finance minister Ashraf Ghani won the vote. Supporters of Ghani’s main rival Abdullah Abdullah claim massive fraud took place during the election, and are calling for a postponement of the vote count. The candidates are currently negotiating through the UN as an intermediary.
