OPINION: US Commitment to Poland’s Security Absurd and Dangerous

The idea of US commitment to Poland’s security is absurd and dangerous, Daniel McAdams, Executive Director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

WASHINGTON, June 4 (RIA Novosti), Lyudmila Chernova – The idea of US commitment to Poland’s security is absurd and dangerous, Daniel McAdams, Executive Director of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity told RIA Novosti Wednesday.

"The idea that the US commitment to Poland's security is America’s sacred duty and the cornerstone of US security is absurd and dangerous," he said.

"It gives Poland further license to escalate tensions with Russia, with the confidence that its recklessness will be backed up by US troops and tax dollars,” McAdams added.

On the first day of his four-day trip to Europe, US President Barack Obama said the US was committed to security in Eastern European states. Besides, he has announced a $1 billion European Reassurance Initiative. According to a statement from the White House, the initiative would enable the US to increase exercises, training, and rotational presence across Europe, especially on the territory of newer allies. It will also allow to increase participation by the US Navy in NATO naval force deployments, including more persistent deployments to the Black and Baltic seas.

McAdams believes that such initiative will only escalate current tensions with Russia.

“While Obama demands that Russia de-escalate, the US announces this huge new fund to be used to conduct joint military exercises on Russia's border and to station US troops in Poland for the first time,” he explained. “If this is not a massive escalation, what is it? No one in his right mind - even the US hawks - believes that Russia is about to invade Western Europe!”

"President Obama praised the new Ukraine president, Petro Poroshenko, for his "willingness to work with all regions of Ukraine," while the Kiev air force fires missiles into residential neighborhoods in Lugansk!" McAdams went on. "The civilian dead in eastern Ukraine are not reported in the US mainstream media, which backs the US administration more than the Soviet media backed the Kremlin in the days of communism."

McAdams thinks the president's European trip is a blessing to the US military-industrial complex, which stands to make billions from the bellicosity of Poland and the other new NATO members.

"These new members do not see NATO as an alliance to preserve the peace, but a powerful weapon to settle old scores with a Soviet Union that no longer exists!" McAdams concluded.

Following the reunification of Crimea with Russia, NATO has been flexing its military muscle near the Russian border. Moscow has repeatedly expressed concerns with western aggressive pressure on Russia.
