Armenia is planning to join the Treaty on Eurasian Economic Union before June 15, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said Thursday.

ASTANA, May 29 (RIA Novosti) – Armenia is planning to join the Treaty on Eurasian Economic Union before June 15, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said Thursday.

“I ask to fix June 15 of the current year as a deadline to sign the agreement on Armenia accession to the Eurasian Economic Union Treaty,” Sargsyan said.

In September 2013, in a surprising turn of events Armenia, which was earlier expected to sign an EU association agreement, said it decided to back off from economic integration with Europe and announced its plans to join the Russian-led Customs Union.

In late April, presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan ordered to prepare a draft agreement by June 1 on Armenia’s Membership in the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAU) was conceived as an EU-style bloc aimed at promoting integration and free trade between its three member states, Russia, Kazakhstan and Belarus, with more countries to follow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier on Thursday the final treaty was completely ready to be signed. The treaty is expected to come into force on January 1, 2015.

First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov told RIA Novosti earlier that the Russian, Belarusian and Kazakh delegations, working under the creation of the Eurasian Economic Union, have managed to resolve all the differences.
