Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday the Ukraine crisis was caused by the United States, which is vying to “tie Russia’s hands” in order to control its gas deliveries.

BUENOS AIRES, May 28 (RIA Novosti) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday the Ukraine crisis was caused by the United States, which is vying to “tie Russia’s hands” in order to control its gas deliveries.

“May God help Ukraine find its own way and may the peace prevail,” the president said during his traditional TV show “In Contact With Maduro.”

“The US and Europe must keep their hands off Ukraine and let this country restore peace and unity,” state-owned Venezolana de Televison cited him as saying.

Maduro described the unrest in Ukraine as a Western plot to surround Russia. “The West has always been trying to bind Russia … They have a plan to encircle it, tie its hands and clip its wings,” the Venezuelan leader asserted.

He recalled that Ukraine had been through more than one “color revolution,” which he described as a “soft coup.”

“The latest one occurred several months ago when Western media helped topple the legitimate president. His ouster followed the same scenario as the one they had tried out on me,” Maduro added.

The Venezuelan leader suggested that Washington pursued its own agenda in Ukraine which was to “seize control of Russian gas deliveries,” adding that the “war hounds” could not forgive Russia’s success in preventing the US and NATO from entering Syria, and urged nations to “be on guard” in the face of the threat coming from the “North-American Empire.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier accused the United States and Europe of playing foul in Ukraine.

“I think that our partners in the United States and European countries acted rudely in Ukraine, employed illegal methods, provoked a state coup and created what we believe was a threat to Russia’s fundamental interests, not only in the sphere of economy but also in the sphere of security,” he said.
