MOSCOW, May 5 (RIA Novosti) – The extraction of shale gas by fracking contributes to lower energy prices thus increasing overall energy use, according to a recent study published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

“Advances in technologies for extracting oil and gas from shale formations have dramatically increased US production of natural gas. As production expands domestically and abroad, natural gas prices will be lower than without shale gas,” the study says, adding that one of the effects of lower prices is increasing overall energy consumption.

The study examines the evidence and analyzes modeling projections finding that “absent substantial policy changes, increased natural gas production slightly increases overall energy use.”

At the same time, the use of shale gas also encourages substitution away from sources such as coal, nuclear, renewables, and electricity, which in turn can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “But in the absence of targeted climate policy measures, it will not substantially change the course of global greenhouse gas concentrations,” the study says.

Hydraulic fracturing technology is a controversial issue in the US, which has seen a shale revolution sweep across the country. Opponents say fracking causes earthquakes, diseases and contaminates groundwater. Proponents claim fracking reduces environmental pollution, decreases energy prices and creates jobs.

Fracking has been completely banned in several countries including France and Bulgaria.
