MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – Officials in the US state of Oregon have ordered a waste-to-energy power plant to stop accepting boxed medical waste after learning that the remains of aborted fetuses from British Columbia could have been used to produce electricity for residents, the Associated Press has reported.
The British Columbia Health Ministry told AP that biomedical waste, including fetal tissue, had been sent to Oregon where it had been incinerated at the plant.
The plant has been identified by a Vancouver-based Catholic newspaper as Covanta Marion, based in Marion County.
The facility is estimated to process 550 tons of municipal solid waste per day, generating up to 13 megawatts of electricity.
Sam Brentano, Chairman of the Marion County Board of Commissioners, said late Wednesday the board is “taking immediate action to prohibit human tissue from future deliveries.”
