Canada will send 500 monitors to observe upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine, scheduled for May 25, the CBC channel reported Thursday citing comments by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

MOSCOW, April 24 (RIA Novosti) – Canada will send 500 monitors to observe upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine, scheduled for May 25, the CBC channel reported Thursday citing comments by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Canada’s election observation mission will include 338 representatives, while another group of 162 observers, including 12 members of parliament, are to join the OSCE election-monitoring mission.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper earlier said that Canada plans to deploy six CF-18 fighter jets to Poland in order to reinforce the NATO air patrol mission in connection with Ukrainian crisis.

Earlier this month, Harper said that Ottawa could impose sanctions targeting Russian banks over the country’s position on the situation in Ukraine. On Tuesday, Moscow expelled the first secretary of the Canadian embassy in Moscow in response to the recent expulsion of a staff member of the Russian embassy in Ottawa.

In February, the Ukrainian parliament backed by far-right movements ousted President Viktor Yanukovych and scheduled an early presidential election for May 25. Moscow has described the uprising in Kiev as an illegitimate fascist coup and a military seizure of power, which resulted in it taking steps to protect ethnic Russians in Ukraine, including the reunification with Crimea.
