MOSCOW, April 22 (RIA Novosti) – US Vice President Joe Biden told Ukrainian lawmakers Tuesday the Unites States was ready to provide economic aid for the country, while calling on Kiev to fight the endemic “cancer of corruption,” Reuters reported.

Biden arrived on a two-day visit Monday to meet with Ukrainian authorities and to roll out a package of technical aid to the crisis-hit country, including energy assistance.

The US vice president said May's upcoming presidential election in Ukraine would be the most important vote in the history of the ex-Soviet state, and that Washington was prepared to help the country's leaders seize the historic opportunity to build a united Ukraine.

Biden added the United States stands with them against "humiliating threats," and the US is ready to help Ukraine become energy-independent in a bid to reduce reliance on Russian supplies.

The vice president’s trip was intended to boost the de-escalation deal reached by Russia, Ukraine, the US and EU last week in Geneva.
