MOSCOW, April 21 (RIA Novosti) – Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul called John F. Tefft a "perfect" candidate for the new head of the US embassy in Moscow.
"I do not know [if has already been appointed], but if nominated and confirmed Tefft would be a fantastic ambassador. One of the best ambos around. Perfect choice," McFaul wrote on his Twitter account, responding to a question by a RIA Novosti reporter.
McFaul resigned from his post as US ambassador to Russia in February, having taken the job in January 2012.
The New York Times earlier reported, citing a source in the White House, that US President Barack Obama was preparing to nominate John F. Tefft as the next US ambassador to Moscow.
Tefft is a career diplomat. He served as US ambassador to Ukraine from late 2009 until August 2013, previously having served as ambassador to Lithuania (2000-2003) and Georgia (2005-2009). He was a deputy chief of the US diplomatic mission to Moscow in the 1990s.
