MOSCOW, April 15 (RIA Novosti) – Terrorists in the Syrian capital Damascus fired mortar rounds at two schools Tuesday, killing one child and injuring more than 40 other people, mainly children, the SANA news agency reported citing local police.

According to police, the terrorists fired at the school in the historic district of Bab Tuma and Quatana, where the Mar Elias church is located. One child died in the first shooting, which injured 36 people, most of them children. Five civilians were wounded in the second attack.

UNICEF states that Syria is currently one of the most dangerous places in the world for children. The organization estimates that over 5 million Syrian children are at risk, which is double last year’s figures. More than 1 million have been forced to seek refuge outside Syria, with 2.8 million no longer in schools.

The military conflict in Syria has been ongoing since March 2011. According to United Nations' estimates, over 130,000 people have died in the conflict, which has seen fierce battles between the Syrian army and armed militants, including foreign mercenaries.
