MOSCOW, April 8 (RIA Novosti) - Pauline Marois declared her resignation as the leader of Parti Quebecois (PQ) after the Liberal Party won Quebec's legislative elections on Monday, Canada's CTV channel reported Tuesday.

"I am very proud of the 18 months during which we formed a government. During this short period of time we did a lot of good and great things and I think we should be very proud," Marois said in declaring her resignation.

The 41st Quebec general election was held on Monday to elect members to the National Assembly of Quebec.

The Liberals led in 70 of the 125 races, receiving 41.5 percent of the vote with 98.8 percent of districts reporting, according to preliminary results. PQ won in 30 races with 25.4 percent of the vote. Coalition Avenir Quebec won 22 seats, taking 23.3 percent of the vote.

That was the lowest share of the vote for PQ since 1970.

The PQ party platform states the party is committed to achieving sovereignty for Quebec after consulting the population in a referendum.

Two previous independence referendums were both defeated, in 1980 and 1995, held under PQ-majority governments.
