BISHKEK, December 2 (RIA Novosti) – The son of a prominent opposition leader in the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan has been detained by police on suspicion of attempting to steal car tires, local law enforcement authorities said Monday.

An Interior Ministry spokesperson said a group of teenagers, including Kamchibek Tashiyev’s 17-year-old son Timur, were caught as they sought to remove the wheels from a Honda Accord overnight Sunday in the capital, Bishkek.

Police said the Mercedes-Benz car the suspects were using at the time of their detention contained eight bricks, three tire wrenches and a jack.

The elder Tashiyev was arrested last October for what authorities said was an attempt to violently seize power after he led a protest in Bishkek to demand the nationalization of an economically crucial gold mine.

Tashiyev and two associates were initially acquitted. That ruling was later overturned by the Supreme Court, which sentenced the trio to terms ranging up to 18 months in jail, but also decreed that the men did not need to return to prison.
