MOSCOW, October 29 (RIA Novosti) – Syrian President Bashar Assad declared a general amnesty for his citizens on Tuesday in an effort to help end the country’s ongoing civil war, the state-owned SANA news agency reported.
Under the presidential decree, anyone who had committed a crime before Tuesday will be eligible, including military deserters. Assad signed a similar decree in April to help quell violence in the Middle Eastern country.
According to UN statistics, more than 100,000 people have died in the 2 1/2-year civil war. The number of refugees caused by the conflict hit 2 million in September, the UN said.
