The Chemical Weapons Convention will come into force for Syria on October 14, 30 days after Damascus had submitted its formal instrument of accession on Saturday, the United Nations chief’s press service said.

NEW YORK, September 15 (RIA Novosti) – The Chemical Weapons Convention will come into force for Syria on October 14, 30 days after Damascus had submitted its formal instrument of accession on Saturday, the United Nations chief’s press service said.

“The Secretary-General, in his capacity as the depositary of the 1992 Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons and on their Destruction, has today received the formal instrument of accession to the Convention by the Syrian Arab Republic,” Ban Ki-moon’s press service said in a statement.

“The Convention will enter into force for the Syrian Arab Republic on the 30th day following the date of deposit of this instrument of accession, namely on 14 October 2013,” the statement reads.

The treaty requires the destruction of all chemical weapon stockpiles, and Syria is one of about half a dozen UN member states that have not joined it.
