MOSCOW, August 26 (RIA Novosti) – All the contracts Syria has signed with Russia are being implemented despite pressure from the West, Syrian President Bashar Assad said in an interview with Izvestia published Monday, but did not clarify the status of a deal for Moscow to deliver S-300 surface-to-air missiles to Damascus.
“Russia is supplying to Syria everything that is needed to ensure its protection and the protection of its people,” Assad said, adding that also included fuel and food supplies.
He praised Russian political and economic support, in particular “the meticulous implementation of military contracts” which he said has helped improve the country’s economic situation despite US pressure, but would not give specifics on the S-300 deal.
“Of course, no country can declare the existence of particular weapon systems or contracts for their delivery: That is part of state and military secrets,” Assad said, adding Russia is honoring all contracts it has signed with Syria.
Russia’s Vedomosti business daily reported earlier in August Moscow had postponed delivery of S-300 air defense systems to Syria, despite having received advance payment for them. The delivery, originally scheduled for spring 2013, has been pushed back to June 2014, the paper said, citing an annual report by the Moscow-based company Avangard, which manufactures the missiles for S-300 systems.
Syria reportedly contracted Russia in 2011 to deliver four S-300 systems for a price tag of $1 billion, Vedomosti said. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed in June a deal had been signed, but said Russia had not shipped the weapons for fear of disrupting “the balance of power in the region.”
The S-300 would be a largely useless weapon for use in the civil war that the Syrian government has been waging since 2011 because the Syrian rebels have no air force, but would be a huge obstacle if Western powers opposed to the Assad regime try to carry out air strikes against Damascus, analysts have previously told RIA Novosti.
Russia previously delivered Yakhont shore-based supersonic anti-ship missiles to Damascus despite Western and Israeli appeals not to, according to media reports. Israeli media claimed earlier this year that Israeli Air Force aircraft had targeted the missiles in Syria.
Russia has, however, suspended deliveries of 36 combat-capable Yak-130 jet trainer aircraft to Damascus, over concerns they could be deployed in the civil war there. Some of the aircraft have been completed but are “awaiting a political decision” on delivery, a defense industry source told RIA Novosti earlier this year at the Paris Air Show.
Assad made his remarks as he faces increasing pressure from Western nations concerned over the apparent use of chemical weapons recently in the Syrian conflict.
US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said Sunday President Obama had asked the US military to “prepare for all contingencies,” following the alleged gas attack incidents, US media reported.
The US Navy has deployed more warships to the Eastern Mediterranean, including four destroyers armed with cruise missiles armed with cruise missiles, according to US media reports.

- BlizzardReality will be revealed soon17:11, 26/08/2013US president Obama changed his ton from warning to decisive expressions of warmongering. He said that no matter what independent commission finds it wont matter a bit. US will attack and taking in account how hawkish he is there is no doubt that this will happen.
Unfortunately for the world Obama is first US president is of African-American origin and that is very important. It has been proven many times in the history as well as in psychology that people who come to position of power from the deprived and sidelined society become very authoritarian in their actions. They tend to use and abuse given power in order to compensate for all previous frustrations and feelings of impotence.
Psychology is full of such cases and it is nothing unusual. Just have look at the dictators through history and you will find that all of them had problems in their young age or they have been growing in deprived areas. However as soon as they come to unlimited power they started to abuse it just to compensate their lost opportunities and grown frustrations.
If we just shortly stop and see Hitler and his Nazi leaders, Stalin and his leaders and so on, we will see same psychological background pattern and their actions will be very similar. There is justification for some scientists demanding that all president candidates should be screened and analyzed about their past and present, and only those whose background is stable and sustainable can be allowed to become candidates for the top office.
However now here we are and the most interesting question is what Russia (Putin) will do. If Russia supplies S-300 and Pantsir antimissile and antiaircraft systems as well as Yakhont if they were really destroyed by Israelis. Israel tested Syrian air defense capability when attacked Yakhont sites and allegedly destroyed them. If Syrians were smart enough and placed models only than that is out of question, however the event explicitly showed that no system would be safe if there is no antiaircraft defense capable to stop attack.
US is publicly announcing that they will attack Syria with cruise missiles from offshore destroyers and from the aircraft's firing missiles from distance. In such case if they would be intercepted by S-300 and their ships attacked by Yakhont missiles than they would very quickly change the tune as it would be very first time that their precious and prized as very safe hardware has been destroyed from the distance by more sophisticated weapons overcoming their defense systems.
I believe that they would try to apply pressure to Russia to stop supplying Syria as for as long Syria would have these weapons there would be no attacks on them.
If Russia pulls the plug and stops with any future supply to Syria than it would spell the end on relation between Syria and Russia and it would be lost for ever. On top of that every country on the world which is hoping that Russia can make the difference by stopping US in their imperialistic advancement will realize that Russia is nothing more than hot air.
Mr Putin, the ball is in your court, play it well.

- arsanlupinWow – ethnic branding not seen since the likes of Nazism!03:30, 28/08/2013That’s a really impressive attempt to blame ethnicity and sociology for imaginary aggressiveness! I don’t think anyone has attempted to typecast behavior in so ethnic a way since the days of Joseph Goebbels, Heinrich Himmler, and Reinhard Heydrich. Bravo – you’ve proved yourself a Nazi truly worthy of the name!
Naturally, Russia would never even think of giving such weapons. Even Putin, while aspiring to the same stature as Iosef Dzhugashvili, isn’t so stupid as to so arm a fool like Assad. He also sees that Assad has lost all credibility, and he’s going to abandon him to his fate. Only the pariahs Iran and Hezbollah will continue to support him, because they desperately need Assad’s support in return. Assad’s inevitable demise will soon be followed by his last hangers-on … and the entire world will be better for it.
Even Putin knows that the USA isn’t – and never was – ‘imperialist’ or ‘fascist’ in any way. Even Putin knows that the use of such stupid phrases is (1) completely inaccurate and (2) completely counterproductive.
Only the lone Marxist dinosaurs, hanging on to their prehistoric existence, remain to bellow their impotent rage that their cherished ideology was abandoned by the rest of the planet for the rotting garbage it always has been. Relax, Marxist dinosaurs – soon you will join your Marxist-Leninist brethren, in that barren wasteland afterlife all of you good communists go to – i.e. rotting corpses. Soon the last of your pitiful excuses for humanity will be dead, and the people of the 21st century can finally forget the greatest human catastrophe, and the greatest murderer, of the 20th century – the Soviet Union.
- rochefortfrancois(no title)01:48, 27/08/2013Mr. Putin, Please give Syria a chance to protect itself and stop the west from attacking with impunity.
- tec123Ruaisa as i said long time back is only a country that talks and talks and talks.19:31, 27/08/2013Well i will bet anyone that Russia is all talk and no actions this is why the West do as it pleases and more countries are joining with Turkey saying it will. The bottom lone here is that Russia cannot protec its interest aboard.
- mishkaWe can not blame Russia and its administration.11:32, 28/08/2013Dear, frankly Putin administration is right to afraid of US and NATO. They are far ahead from Russia in military capabilities. Lavrov says "we will not launch a war with somebody for Syria." REmember Russia could not dare it even for itself in S.Ossetia and Abkhazia in 2008. When the west changed its rhetoric and started to threat Russia to stop the military action against Georgia, Russia had to obey their demand.
BEcause unfortunatelly my beloved Russia is DESPERATE. This is the naked truth. If they want NATO can invate or destroy Russia only in 1 week. Russia has NO CHANCE to counterbalance the NATO. It s catastrophe for humankind but it is the truth.
We can not blame the recent Kremlin administration for this. It is because of "the lost decades" after collapsing of S.U. Saled and alcoholic politicians, lazy selfish people and corruption are guilty. In internet there are dozens of international dating sites specific for Russian ladies. It is like wife on sale. Speak with those ladies they say it s their only aim to leave Russia for a better life standarts. How can a country can survive with such betraying public? I even has been eyewitness Russians say they wish one day Russian territory will be American soil and they will be American citizens. Tell me please will thy fight against the west in a future war?!?!
American propaganda machine is non stop working in mass media in Russia. And Russian kids like Disney cartoons very much and Russian youth like to watch western music clip on MTV.
New ties between Russia and Japan would mark not only a breakthrough in their relations but also a significant shift in Northeast Asia’s political dynamic. Both are secondary players in a region overshadowed by an increasingly assertive China, which has not hesitated to push against the boundaries of its neighbors.
