US President Barack Obama has urged the Egyptian armed forces to pass authority to a civilian government, the White House reported Wednesday.

MOSCOW, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - US President Barack Obama has urged the Egyptian armed forces to pass authority to a civilian government, the White House reported Wednesday.

“We are deeply concerned by the decision of the Egyptian armed forces to remove President Morsi and suspend the Egyptian constitution,” Obama said in a statement.

“I now call on the Egyptian military to move quickly and responsibly to return full authority back to a democratically elected civilian government as soon as possible through an inclusive and transparent process, and to avoid any arbitrary arrests of President [Mohamed] Morsi and his supporters,” he said.

“Given today’s developments, I have also directed the relevant departments and agencies to review the implications under US law for our assistance to the Government of Egypt,” Obama said.

The Egyptian armed forces on Wednesday deposed Morsi and suspended the country’s constitution, Egyptian Defense Minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi said in a televised address to the nation. He said the head of Egypt’s Constitutional Court, Adly Mansour, would lead the country during the transition period until an early presidential election is held.
