NEW DELHI, May 5 (RIA Novosti) – At least four people were killed in Bangladesh on Sunday as tens of thousands of protesters calling for the death punishment for those who offend Islam blocked major highways around the capital, Dhaka.

National media said some 200,000 people had taken part in the protest, which was called by the Hifazat-e-Islam radical Islamist group. The group had called for the arrests of what it called “blogger-atheists” it said were insulting Islam.

Reports said clashes broke out between police and protesters around the main mosque in Dhaka.

Other reports said a number of bombs had gone off in the area. Around 100 people were also reported to have been injured.

Protesters also demanded a blasphemy law, calls which have been rejected by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
