MOSCOW, April 29 (RIA Novosti) - The owner of the building, which collapsed last week in Bangladesh killing over 380 people, was arrested on Sunday as he attempted to flee the country, Al Jazeera reported.

According to the agency, Sohel Rana, a local politician with the ruling Awami League party, was detained by policemen near the Indian border on Sunday and was convoyed for questioning.

“The human-faced beast who had built a death trap here was arrested while trying to flee the country,” the agency quoted as saying Jahangir Kabir Nanak, a local government minister.

At least 3,000 people were working in garment factories in the nine-storey Rana Plaza building in Savar, an industrial suburb of Dhaka, when it caved in on Wednesday morning. The building reportedly housed at least five garment factories and some 300 shops that employed nearly 6,000 people in total.

The owner of the Rana Plaza building is accused of using second-rate materials in the construction of the facility that was put in operation in 2006.

Three owners and top executives of garment factories housed in the Rana Plaza were also arrested earlier on charges of negligence, while three more remain at large, according to the agency.

Survivors of the tragedy said earlier they were afraid to enter the building when cracks appeared in supporting structures on last week on Tuesday. Shops and banks were reportedly closed for safety reasons on the same day, but garment factory workers were forced to return to their workplaces.
