Egypt Parliamentary Elections Expected in Two Months

Egypt’s parliamentary elections are expected to be held in the next two months, a spokesman for Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said on Sunday.

CAIRO, February 3 (RIA Novosti) – Egypt’s parliamentary elections are expected to be held in the next two months, a spokesman for Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi said on Sunday.

“We have two months or even less to wait until the elections to the lower house of the new Egyptian parliament, the People's Assembly,” Yasser Ali told journalists on Sunday.

The official date will be announced by President Morsi later this month after the country’s new parliamentary elections law, which was approved at a referendum in December, is passed by the High Constitutional Court.

The spokesman has rejected all the proposals of the National Salvation Front and other opposition groups to form a national salvation government before the parliamentary elections.

“The preparation for the voting demands much effort and time, besides, the country has enough other problems that need attention,” Ali said.

He said however the “truly legal national salvation government” will be set up after the new parliament is formed.

Egypt's key opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front, announced earlier this week it could mobilize supporters to call for early presidential elections.

The Front has backed the calls for President Morsi to resign amid continuing protests across the country a day after clashes in the capital Cairo left one person dead and dozens injured, Al Jazeera reported on Saturday.
