MOSCOW, January 3 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 211 protected birds - blue-fronted Amazon parrots - taken from Paraguay’s remote forests have been rescued as police made four arrests, British media reported.
The Sky News satellite television news broadcaster on Wednesday quoted Paraguayan environmental ministry veterinarian Carlos Britos as saying many parrots were still juveniles seized from their nests.
Britos said government biologists are looking after the birds in a national park, and added that they will be brought back to the wild once they can fly.
Blue-fronted Amazons are commonly kept as house pets. However, Paraguayan laws stipulate up to eight years of imprisonment for theft of wild animals or plants.
