UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern and alarm over growing violence in Syria, after reports that Syrian forces attacked the Yarmouk refugee camp

MOSCOW, December 17 (RIA Novosti) – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon expressed concern and alarm over growing violence in Syria, after reports that Syrian forces attacked the Yarmouk refugee camp.

“The Secretary General is alarmed by the continued dramatic escalation of violence in Syria over the past several days, and the grave danger facing civilians in areas under fire,” Ban’s spokesman said in a statement released Sunday night.

"Targeting civilians or carrying out military operations in populated areas, in an indiscriminate or disproportionate fashion that harms civilians is a war crime," he added.

Syrian fighter jets bombed the refugee of Palestinian refugees in southern part of Damascus on Sunday. At least 25 people sheltering in a mosque were killed in the attack, according to media reports.

There are approximately 500,000 Palestinians in Syria.

The conflict between government troops and opposition forces has claimed the lives of over 30,000 people since March 2011, according to UN figures.

Syrian Vice President Farouq al-Sharaa told Lebanese newspaper al-Akhbar in an interview published on Monday that neither side is close to winning.
