MOSCOW, November 25 (RIA Novosti) – At least 112 people have died in a fire that broke out in a clothes factory in Bangladesh, Sky News reported on Sunday, citing local officials.

The fire erupted in the seven-storey building operated by Tazreen Fashions on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka late on Saturday. Many workers jumped from the factory's upper floors to escape the raging fire before firefighters arrived to put out the blaze.

By Sunday morning, firefighters had recovered 100 bodies while another 12 people, who had suffered injuries after jumping from the building to escape the fire, later died at several hospitals, the local police said.

The death toll could rise as the search for victims is continuing.

Army soldiers and border guards were deployed to help police keep the situation under control as thousands of anxious relatives of the factory workers gathered at the scene.

The causes of the blaze are not yet known.

Bangladesh has over 4,000 clothes factories, many with poor safety standards that cause several deadly fires every year.

Bangladesh annually earns about $20 billion from exports of garment products, mainly to the US and Europe.
