Armed clashes broke out between Syrian security forces and rebels from the Free Syrian Army in central Damascus near the official army’s headquarters early Wednesday, according to satellite channel Al-Mayadeen.
The skirmish followed shortly on the heels of two explosions at the General Staff building, for which the Free Syrian Army claimed responsibility, Al-Jazeera reported. The Minister of Information, Omran al-Zoubi, told Syrian state television that no commanders were hurt.
No casualties have been reported yet, according to Al-Mayadeen, but the blasts were apparently strong enough to result in serious damage.
Syrian security forces have cordoned off the building. This was the third attempt in the last two months to bomb the General Staff.
A civil war continues to rage in Syria, where rebel forces are battling against Syrian regulars with the aim of toppling the Bashar al-Assad regime. According to the UN, more than 20,000 people – combatants and civilians – have died in the fighting, which began in March 2011.

- Nico IIIWinning hearts and minds...14:22, 26/09/2012Is this how the militants expect to achieve victory - by setting off bombs and then shooting amongst the chaos and confusion?
Iraq has experienced these sort of attacks from Sunni militants for years. It's Government remains in place.
The simple fact is that the vast majority of people just want to live in peace and quiet. Ergo the vast majority of people resent the rebels for bringing the fight to their neighbourhood.
If they were popular amongst civilians, there would be millions of people joining the fight against the Syrian Government and its military? But where are they?
We have witnessed the total defeat of western Ukraine, Western nationalists and the West in general, which made the unfortunate decision to support the anti-government activity. They failed to realize that the collapse of Yanukovych means the collapse of Ukrainian unity. They set fire to their own home and planted a time bomb under Ukraine’s territorial integrity.
