With 109 of 110 races decided, the Belarusian opposition failed to win any parliamentary seats in voting on Sunday, the chairwoman of the Central Election Commission said on Monday morning, citing reports from the election districts.
“It’s doubtful that any [opposition candidates] won. None of the districts said anything about that,” Chairwoman Lidia Yermoshina said, adding that at present she had only seen a list of the names of the winning candidates.
The winners have been determined for 109 out of 110 districts, Yermoshina said. The vote in one district was insufficient to determine a winner and will be repeated, she said.
Voter turnout was 74.3% overall, Yermoshina said. The highest turnout – 80 percent – was recorded in Vitebsk region and the lowest – 60 percent – was in Minsk.
Yermoshina also said the commission received 110 complaints.
“There were no serious violations in the voting,” the head of a delegation of election observers from Russia’s Federation Council, Valery Shnyakin, told RIA Novosti on Monday morning.
“There are no complaints that could be serious enough to affect the outcome of the vote,” he said.
The Central Election Commission declared the elections valid at 3 p.m., after more than 50 percent of eligible voters had cast their ballots.
Representatives of five opposition groups and parties, meanwhile, denounced the vote as opaque and undemocratic, citing interference in the electoral process by the authorities. The Central Election Commission countered by saying the opposition had resolved long before the election to pursue a course aimed at discrediting the vote in order to pander to a Western audience.

The British experience can be instructive for Russia. London retains its British Commonwealth if it wants to use this as a foundation for integration in the future. That’s a valuable lesson for Russian experts who are calling for an end to “ineffective” associations like the CIS, the Russian World and others.
