Twelve people were killed and 59 others injured when two suicide bombers struck a U.S.-Afghan military base in central Afghanistan on Saturday, the Pajhwok news agency said.

One bomber attacked the base in the Sayyidabad district on foot and then another detonated a truck, provincial governor spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Doctors said eight civilians and four police were killed.

Eighty seven Taliban insurgents have been killed in operations in different Afghan provinces, the Afghan Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

Afghan forces and the 130,000 NATO-led coalition troops have stepped up operations against Taliban and other militants across the country but the insurgents retaliated with suicide and roadside bomb attacks.
