The Free Syrian Army (FSA) claimed on Thursday that it had shot down a government MiG-23 fighter jet in the northwestern Idlib Province, Al Arabiya TV reported.

A video, “exclusively obtained” by the TV channel, shows the aircraft falling from the sky and billowing smoke. Two pilots, who safely ejected, are also seen descending by parachutes.

The Syrian authorities have made no comment on the incident so far.

The FSA also claimed on Thursday that it had destroyed 11 helicopters and a number of tanks around the Tiftiaz military airport. The airport, located in the northern city of Aleppo, is one of the country’s largest bases for military helicopters.

There has been no independent confirmation. If confirmed, this will be the third time that the Syrian air force loses a MiG aircraft during the ongoing civil conflict in the country. In June, a Syrian pilot flew a MiG-21 fighter jet across the border with Jordan, where he was granted asylum.

On August 13 Syrian rebels said they had shot down a government MiG-23 fighter jet in the east of the country. The pro-government Syrian media, however, said that technical failure had occurred while the aircraft was in test flight, causing the control panel to break down and the pilot to eject.
