The United States has promised to provide Poland with archive material related to the execution of Polish officers near Katyn in 1940, the Rzeczpospolita newspaper reported on Friday.

Polish experts hope the documents will shed light on Washington's wartime position on the massacre.

“This is a very important initiative. We will learn what the Americans knew about our officers' slaying,” the newspaper quoted Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Bogusław Winid as saying.

Winid said the documents received from the United States will be posted online.

Twenty two housand Polish army officers and intellectuals were shot by Stalin's security police, the NKVD, in 1940. The USSR blamed the Nazis for the crime at the time, but Mikhail Gorbachev finally admitted the USSR's responsibility.

Russia's state archive published once-secret documents on the Katyn murders on its website in April 2010.

In November 2010, Russia's lower house of parliament declared that Stalin ordered the execution of the Polish officers and civilians in Katyn.

The Katyn issue was controversial even during the war, with Allied leaders reluctant to investigate the issue for fear of offending Stalin, Rzeczpospolita says.
