Specialists at Dikemark Psychiatric Hospital may refuse to treat Anders Breivik, accused of mass murder, even if the court on Friday acknowledges him insane because their last evaluation showed the defendant had no mental illness, Aftenposten daily reported on Thursday.

On 22 July 2011, Breivik bombed government buildings in Oslo, which resulted in eight deaths, then opened fire at a youth camp of the ruling Labor party on Utevva Island, killing another 69 people.

Dikemark is the largest psychiatric hospital in Norway. Its experts examined Breivik in winter and found no evidence of serious mental disorders. They will have to conduct a reexamination “of the Norwegian shooter” if the court finds him insane and make a decision for his compulsory treatment.

Experts do not rule out that the reexamination will show that Breivik is sane and treatment will be excluded.

“If the court finds that Breivik needs compulsory treatment, this means that specialists of the hospital will need to reexamine him as this would be the case with any other patient,” a representative of the hospital, Anne Kristine Bergem, said.

She added that in order to begin treatment, specialists of the hospital should diagnose a patient and then decide which treatment it is required and whether he needs this treatment at all.

“We cannot treat a person just because the court decided so. We, ourselves, should diagnose and treat him,” Bergem added.

Breivik considers himself mentally stable.

If deemed mentally ill, Breivik may spend the rest of his life in a psychiatric ward. If the court finds him sane, the killer will serve up to 21 years in prison with possible indefinite extensions.

Brevik said he wants to be ruled sane and his attack considered a political statement rather than an act of a madman.

Breivik is expected to be sentenced on August 24.
