More than 2.5 million people in Syria urgently need aid, a top official at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) said.

“There’s 2.5 million people in need of aid right now inside Syria, and 1.2 million have been displaced from the home,” Mark Bartolini, Director of the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance at USAID, said on Tuesday.

“On that scale, it’s right up there with the worst crises in the world today,” he told journalists at an online news conference.

Since March 2011, the Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives, according to estimates by various Syrian opposition groups. The West is pushing for President Bashar al-Assad’s ouster, while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria saying the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
