U.S. Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Saturday named conservative Paul Ryan as his vice presidential running mate in the November election.

"I am proud to announce Paul Ryan as my VP. Stand with us today," Romney wrote on his Twitter account.

Romney was expected to make the announcement at an event at a former battleship, USS Wisconsin, in Norfolk, Virginia.

Ryan, 42, is the Republican congressman for his home state of Wisconsin. He also chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee.

An adherent of the conservative Tea Party movement, Ryan is best-known for his controversial alternative budget plans, which counter U.S. President Barack Obama's 2012 and 2013 budget proposals.

Romney starts a four-state bus campaign trip later on Saturday.

Recent opinion polls suggest the former Massachusetts governor is locked in a close race with Obama in the November 6 vote.
