The United Nations is ready to cooperate with the new Libyan leadership for the sake of justice and reconciliation of Libyan nationals, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said in connection with the country’s “first election in nearly half a century” as rendered on the UN website.

“The United Nations looks forward to working with the new leaders of Libya and the youth, women and men who make up its civil society, as they address the challenges of drafting a constitution and building a secure and accountable state,” Ban’s press service said in a statement on Sunday.

“The secretary general trusts that they will do so in a spirit of inclusion, justice and reconciliation among all Libyans,” it said.

Some 63 percent of eligible Libyan voters voted on Saturday in the country’s first free general elections in more than 40 years and the first polls since the downfall and death of dictator Muammar Gaddafi in October 2011. The elections were to the country’s supreme legislative body, national congress.

Gaddafi was killed after being captured by Libyan rebels in his home town of Sirte on October 20, 2011. His death marked the end of a bloody nine-month-long revolt that broke out in February 2011, triggered by popular uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt, and claimed thousands of lives.

Following Gaddafi’s fall, Libya’s opposition leaders formed the National Transitional Council (NTC), which has since been in power, trying to maintain stability in the North African country marred by deepening regional and tribal divisions that have often erupted into violence.

The congress, which is to replace the NTC, will be tasked with forming the cabinet, managing the country in the transitional period and adopting a law on elections.
