Iran's Revolutionary Guards test-fired a number of intermediate range ballistic missiles on Tuesday as part of large-scale training exercises under the name Great Prophet 7, Iranian news agency ISNA reported.

"Dozens of rockets" of various ranges and types were fired, including Shahab-1, -2 and -3 ballistic missiles, the agency said.

Iranian Revolutionary Guard sources have previously reported that the targets for the missiles were simulated military bases of a potential enemy, located in the deserts in Semnan Province in the north of the country.

According to western media sources, Shahab-3 has a range of around 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) allowing Iran to strike Israel and U.S. bases in the Middle East. The other missiles Iran test-fired on Tuesday are shorter range systems capable of firing from 200-700 kilometers (120-420 miles).

The Great Prophet 7 exercise started on Monday and is expected to be completed on Wednesday.

A unit of the Revolutionary Guard, which is an elite unit of the Iranian armed forces and does not come under the direct control of the high command was formed on Monday and has been carrying out a series of command and control exercises. These are expected to include flights on Wednesday by manned aircraft and UAVs.

The exercises come as the European Union's embargo on oil imports from Iran, agreed on January 23, comes into effect.

The United States and many European countries, as well as Israel, accuse Iran of having a covert nuclear weapons development program hidden in its civil atomic research and power generation effort. Iran denies that claim and says its nuclear developments are entirely peaceful. Four UN sanctions are in force regarding Iran's nuclear program
